David Silbergeld - Cocaine Smuggler and Character in My Buddy from Brooklyn married Mel Harris

David Silbergeld was a sharp character who moved comfortably between New York’s nightlife, horse racing circles, and the shadowy world of high-stakes cocaine smuggling in the late 1970s. Standing about 5'11" with a stocky build,  and short sandy military-style hair, He dressed casually but with understated style.

Silbergeld was in the Navy early on and might have been a reservist in the late 1970's and early 1980's as he had access to arms from local armories.  He supplied the Jacobson crew with guns and grenades for coke smuggling missions. It has also been said that David, Monaghan from All Ireland Inn Bar and Jack also had connections to the IRA (Irish Republican Army) as a secondary source of arms.  Silbergeld became deeply involved in cocaine trafficking, helping facilitate deals and logistics during an era when narcotics money flowed through Manhattan penthouses, racetracks, and private clubs.

In 1982 he flew a double engine cessna to Colombia and picked up 200 million dollars in yayo then flew it back to Long Island where 150 federal agents were waiting. He was sentenced to 4months of probation.

Following the turmoil surrounding Jack’s murder and Buddy’s legal troubles, Silbergeld remained a steady presence and eventually married Mel Harris, further tying him into the complex personal and criminal relationships that defined this period. His character represents the transitional figure of the era — part businessman, part smuggler, and always positioned just close enough to power and danger to shape the unfolding drama.
