Cal Rainey Character Profile Page

Cal Rainey was Born in 1916 and passed in 2009. He entered the business as a hot walker in 1930 and started riding in 1932.  He worked his way up as an ID clerk and then joined the Army curing world war 2.  When he returned from overseas he continued on and became an even higher up racing official. In 1957 he was appointed steward and kept that role until 1972 when he became Executive Director of The Jockey Club.

Cal was an antagonist with respect to Buddy Jacobson, he was not a fan of Buddy's politics, background and the organization which Buddy became president of: HPBA - Horseman's Protective Benevolent Association. It has been said that Cal made a negative sounding slur against Jacobson in 1969 which was the same year that Buddy was for the most part ousted from the sport based on The Jockey Club / NYRA dislike of Buddy's pension plan for the backstretch workers.

Some information about the orgs:

NYRA was formed by The Jockey Club at the request of the state.  The Jockey Club was founded in 1750 in England.  The U.S. Jockey Club was founded in NY in 1894.  TJC maintained authoritative control over NYRA until the mid 1970's after the Buddy Jacobson lawsuit and other legal issues cleared.  They no longer maintain omnipotent control yet maintain status as one of 3 stewards which also include the state gaming commission and the NYRA.
