Philip Bieber 1900 - 1981 was the brother of Isidor Bieber and a partner with Hirsch Jacobs. The Bieber Jacobs stable was legendary! Philip “Phil” Bieber was a Thoroughbred horse owner and trainer and a longtime East Coast racing figure who helped shape modern horsemen’s advocacy. A World War I veteran who served with the U.S. Marines’ 2nd Division in Europe, Bieber later operated a ticket agency across from the Metropolitan Opera House in Manhattan before turning full-time to horse racing. He saddled his first winner, Tellwick, on June 26, 1936, and became well known at Rockingham Park in New Hampshire and Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts. In 1940, he organized the Horsemen’s Retirement Fund at Rockingham Park, a movement that ultimately evolved into the national Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. Bieber later lived in Coral Gables, Florida, where he remained connected to racing until his death at age 81.
